Dental implants are a tooth replacement option that looks and functions just like a real tooth. Its titanium post is surgically implanted into the jawbone at the site of the missing tooth, stimulating the jawbone like your tooth’s root once did. This is important in maintaining healthy levels of jawbone. Then, the top of the implant is capped with a specially designed dental crown with the translucent gleam and characteristics of a natural tooth. As good as they are, dental implants aren’t for everyone. Today on the blog, our implant dentist in Okemos, Dr. Christine Tenaglia, shares what it means to be a candidate for dental implants and why some patients may be better suited for different options.
Am I a good candidate for dental implants?
Being a candidate for a dental implant involves many components other than just needing to replace a missing tooth. Candidates should be at least 18 years of age and be in overall good health.
In general, it may not be ideal for smokers to get dental implants because nicotine impedes the healing process and could compromise the implant, leading to total implant failure. However, tobacco use isn’t necessarily an automatic disqualification. Patients receiving radiation of the head and neck may be advised to explore other tooth replacement options besides an implant.
Another consideration is the state of your oral health. Since dental implants rely on healthy levels of jawbone, it is essential that you do not have gum disease, or it could jeopardize the success of the implant. If you have gum disease, this does not necessarily preclude you from getting dental implants. However, our Okemos dentist will recommend treating active oral infections before getting implants.
What if I don’t have enough jawbone?
Sometimes, patients may not have sufficient jawbone to stabilize the implant. Bone augmentation (a bone graft), sinus lift, or ridge expansion may be options to provide a stable foundation for the implant to be successful. These procedures often are performed by an oral surgeon before having your implant placed.
Should I get a dental implant?
Deciding to replace a missing tooth with an implant is an individual decision. Dental implants are the ideal treatment of choice if you have multiple missing teeth to replace and want to maintain your facial structure (avoid sunken in look). Since dental implants are permanent and sturdy, you never have to worry about dietary restrictions or not being able to chew the foods you want. If you want to feel confident about your smile, and save money in the long-term, then dental implants may be the right choice.
