Okemos, Lansing and East Lansing Michigan
Turn on the TV, go online or pick up a magazine and you’ll see the same thing: celebrity after celebrity, all of whom have full sets of pearly-white, perfect-looking teeth. The fact that all those celebrities have beautiful smiles is not some mysterious coincidence or a statistical anomaly. In many cases, these smiles look flawless by design. How do smiles make this transformation? Through cosmetic dentistry, which focuses on improving the appearance of the teeth and mouth. Porcelain veneers have been a preferred treatment for cosmetic dentists for decades, and there are several reasons why. If you are unhappy with your smile and you long to fix the cosmetic imperfections that are holding you back, veneers could be the solution you’ve been seeking. That’s why your cosmetic dentist in Okemos, Dr. Christine Tenaglia, wants to make sure you understand four key components about veneers.
Fact 1: What veneers are and how they work
A veneer is a thin shell of material that is designed to cover the front of the tooth or teeth being treated. At Tenaglia Smiles, we work with veneers that are made of dental porcelain. These veneers can be customized to match the size, shape, and color that you desire. As for the dental porcelain material itself, it is a beautiful and durable material that has a similar translucency to genuine tooth enamel. This porcelain also resists surface stains.
Fact 2: How we install veneers
Typically, veneers take two appointments at our office in Okemos. At the initial appointment, a small portion of the existing tooth structure is removed, so that the veneers bond flush against the front of your teeth. Digital impressions are captured of the teeth that are being treated. A temporary restoration is installed, and the impressions are sent to a dental laboratory to fabricate your new veneers. You return to our office approximately two weeks later to have your permanent veneers installed. We also offer Lumineers, which are extremely thin porcelain veneers that can be placed without removing any of the current tooth structure.
Fact 3: Veneers are versatile
Veneers simultaneously can address a wide range of cosmetic issues affecting one or more teeth. However, that doesn’t mean they are the best option for everyone, especially if the cost is a concern.
However, veneers also can be a long-term solution to a variety of aesthetic dental issues, such as:
- Teeth that are chipped or cracked
- Severe discoloration
- Broken teeth
- Teeth of irregular shapes and/or sizes
- Hiding a gap between teeth
- Slight misalignment or crookedness across several teeth
Fact 4: Caring for veneers is easy
To maintain your veneers, you just brush them like you would your natural teeth. Be sure to floss around the edges, to keep food particles from accumulating that could lead to an area of tooth decay. You also want to ensure that you continue to get checkups every six months from Tenaglia Smiles.
