Okemos Dentist answers Common Questions about Teeth Whitening

Serving areas of Okemos, Lansing, and East Lansing, MI

Teeth whitening is the most popular procedure in cosmetic dentistry—and for a good reason. It’s a fast, convenient, and cost-effective way to improve the appearance of your smile. Not everyone needs a whitening treatment, but brightening your smile by just a few shades can make a dramatic difference. You might have questions about these procedures, and you’re not alone. That’s why Okemos’ favorite dentist Dr. Christine Tenaglia compiled this list of answers to frequently asked questions about teeth whitening.

Does professional teeth whitening work?

It depends on the type of stains being treated. Extrinsic stains develop because of regular consumption of coffee, wine, and dark-colored fruits. Other stains develop intrinsically (from inside the teeth), which can not be reached by even the most powerful teeth whitening gel. Dr. Tenaglia will conduct an evaluation of your teeth before beginning any cosmetic treatment. These stains may form as a side effect of certain prescription medications or be an indicator of a more serious issue with your teeth that is causing your enamel’s deterioration. Fortunately, if you have intrinsic stains on your teeth, you still can transform your smile and eliminate these stains by covering your teeth with beautiful porcelain veneers.

How long will a whitening procedure take?

At Tenaglia Smiles, we can complete your professional whitening treatment in a single appointment—usually in about an hour and a half. After covering your gums and lips, we apply the powerful Zoom! Whitening gel to your teeth. Next, a special light is used to activate the whitening agent in the gel. The light and gel work in combination, releasing the stains that have seeped into your enamel. A treatment with Zoom! Whitening gel can brighten your teeth by five to 13 shades.

How often can you whiten your teeth?

There are so many available methods to whiten teeth: toothpaste, oral rinses, store-bought kits, and professional treatments. You can prolong the results of any whitening treatment by practicing good dental hygiene that includes twice-daily brushing, flossing every day, and seeing your dentist every six months for a professional cleaning. That said, the results of a professional whitening treatment last longer because they use more powerful bleaching agents than are found in any over-the-counter product. Moreover, our whitening procedures are administered under the care of Dr. Tenaglia and her staff, lowering the risk of the treatment, causing enhanced sensitivity in your teeth.
