Veneers and cosmetic bonding are two of the most performed and popular procedures in cosmetic dentistry. Both procedures achieve similar results, but there are some differences between the two that may influence your decision. Read on as Dr. Christine Tenaglia discusses the differences between veneers and dental bonding so that you decide which procedure is right for you.
What are veneers?
Veneers are ultra-thin porcelain shells that are custom-made to fit over the front surface of each tooth being treated. Dr. Tenaglia uses only the finest quality of porcelain so that results are as natural as real tooth enamel. The porcelain color can be shaded to a bright white if you’re getting a complete smile makeover, which means all the teeth that are visible in your smile line are covered with veneers.
Veneers never stain and conceal imperfections like crooked, gapped, twisted, or chipped teeth. The procedure begins by numbing the treatment area, and then Dr. Tenaglia removes a tiny bit of tooth enamel to make room for the veneers. It can take a couple of weeks for the dental lab to return your veneers. In the meantime, you’ll wear temporary veneers to protect your teeth. Once the veneers are ready, Dr. Tenaglia permanently bonds the veneers to your teeth, revealing a beautiful new smile. Veneers should last for many years or about a decade. You can prolong these results by taking exceptional care of your teeth and gums and practicing oral hygiene daily.
What is dental bonding?
Dental bonding is used to treat the same issues as veneers. So, if you have gapped, crooked, twisted, or uneven teeth, dental bonding can be a quick fix. Dental bonding uses a composite material that is bonded to your tooth and can look as natural and beautiful as porcelain veneers.
One of the best benefits of bonding is that it can usually be completed in one office visit, depending on how many teeth are treated. Therefore, if you need an instant solution, dental bonding is the way to go. This procedure also requires some tooth preparation so that the material doesn’t look thick and bulky once bonded to your tooth. One of the downsides, however, is that dental bonding can darken over time if you consume foods and beverages that stain or you’re a tobacco user.
Should I choose veneers or dental bonding?
There is no one-size-fits all answer to this question. Each patient has unique smile needs and a specific budget and timeline. Therefore, the best way to know which treatment is right for you is to have a consultation with Dr. Tenaglia and discuss with her what you’d like to change about your smile. She also reviews the costs involved in your treatment plan, as well as the timeline so that you can make the most informed decision.
