Okemos, Lansing, East Lansing MI
It’s almost time for spring cleaning, and while we’re making sure our living spaces are clean and tidy, how about we also take some time to focus on our dental health? Springtime brings lots to be happy about; is your smile ready? Today, our Okemos cosmetic dentist, Dr. Christine Tenaglia, is reviewing a few simple tips to help make sure you’re maintaining a healthy smile this spring.
Replace old toothbrushes
Out with the old and in with the new! When spring cleaning your home and specifically your bathrooms, replace old toothbrushes with new ones. Toothbrushes lose effectiveness over time, and bacteria can lurk and grow in the bristles — yuck! Our Lansing family dentist recommends replacing toothbrushes every six months and using soft-bristled brushes since hard bristles can scratch tooth enamel and sensitive gum tissue.
Restock your floss supply
Our family dentist in East Lansing suggests using at least 18 inches of floss each time you floss, which should be once a day. So if you’re flossing as often as you should be, you’ll go through hundreds of feet of floss a month! Be sure to make floss-restocking part of your annual spring cleaning routine so you don’t unexpectedly run out.
Hydrate
The warmer spring weather is the perfect time to reevaluate your water intake. Not only is water good for our bodies, but it’s also good for our teeth. Water balances pH which negates the effects of sugar and acids on the teeth. It also supports salivary function, which is important because saliva helps remove food debris from teeth and neutralizes acids in the mouth.
Schedule a dental appointment
In addition to brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once daily, be sure you’re visiting our East Lansing family dentist for routine checkups every six months. If it’s been longer than six months since you’ve been to our office, be sure to call and schedule an appointment to start your spring with a sensational smile.
