More and more people are saying goodbye to braces and choosing Invisalign when they want or need to straighten their teeth. Rather than use a system of brackets and wires to guide teeth into their preferred alignment, Invisalign is a method of aligner therapy. You wear transparent plastic aligners that are designed specifically to fit snugly over your teeth. These aligners exert gentle pressure to move teeth and alleviate crookedness. We have told you in the past about the Invisalign process, but you may be wondering if there is any discomfort while using the aligners to straighten your teeth. Okemos’ certified Invisalign provider Dr. Christine Tenaglia explores that topic today on the blog.
Is Invisalign uncomfortable?
No matter what type of orthodontic treatment you might choose, the process of straightening your teeth only occurs because pressure is applied to your teeth to alter their alignment. This pressure, even if it is exerted as a gentle force, can create discomfort from time to time. If you had braces growing up, you probably remember how sore you could be after those appointments where you had the braces adjusted. With Invisalign, you can expect to feel some short-term discomfort every time you receive a new set of aligners. This soreness might manifest in a single tooth, several teeth at the same time, your mouth muscles, your jaws… even your tongue.
How to manage Invisalign discomfort
- A softer diet: As mentioned, it is normal for your teeth to be sore when you get a new set of aligners. If you experience this, switch to a diet of soft foods until the discomfort subsides. Foods to consider include smoothies and any variety of minced meat. While crunchy produce is a great choice for your oral health most of the time, you want to avoid any type of hard or crunchy food if you are experiencing discomfort from your Invisalign aligners.
- Orthodontic wax: When you choose to straighten your teeth with Invisalign in Okemos, your aligners are unique and designed specifically to fit the shape of your teeth. A snug fit is required but sometimes the aligners make such a close fit that they cause discomfort. Applying some orthodontic wax to the edge of your aligners can help.
- Cool off: Use of a cold compress is a long-established method of treating pain and swelling no matter where it emanates in the body. If your Invisalign aligners are causing discomfort, this same tried and true treatment can help. Be sure to apply the cold compress only for a few minutes at a time.
You also can use an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
