Periodontitis-causing Bacteria Found in Colorectal Cancer Tissue

According to a new Canadian study, a type of bacteria involved in periodontal diseases, Fusobacterium nucleatum, has been linked to colorectal cancer tissue. Authors of this study Castellarin & Freeman, et al. found that a number of patients with colorectal cancer had much higher levels of F. nucleatum than in a healthy bowel tissue.  By ways of modern technology and genetic sequencing they were able to identify and compare microorganisms from bowel tissue of both healthy and affected patients. Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of a cancer deaths worldwide.  This is just a reminder that as our bodies are affected systemically, and taking care of bacteria that starts in our mouths can help us prevent infections elsewhere!!
