Most people associate getting braces with teens. It only seems natural. It’s almost seen as a right of passage as a teenager to get braces. However, that is not always so in every case. We see adults in our office who never had the opportunity to get braces because they weren’t affordable at the time, or they just figured that they would live with their smile the way that it is. Dr. Christine Tenaglia, an Okemos Invisalign provider, is here to tell you that there is no age limit to straightening your teeth. We’ve got great news for adults that want to straighten their teeth without the hassle of braces. Find out on the blog how clear aligner therapy could be the solution you have been looking for!
What is clear aligner therapy?
Dr. Tenaglia, a certified Invisalign provider in East Lansing, offers clear aligner orthodontics for adults. Invisalign uses custom clear aligners to create perfectly aligned teeth. These aligners work similarly like traditional braces but without the look of metal brackets and wires. Braces are designed to realign teeth with slow and gentle pressure, making minor adjustments throughout treatment. Invisalign does exactly that but with clear aligners instead of metal.
The aligners are made by taking digital images and scans of your teeth. Then, the aligners are crafted to fit your mouth. The aligners should be worn at least 22 hours a day, although they can be removed when eating or to brush and floss your teeth. They are easy to care for. You will have a case provided to you to store your aligners whenever you need to remove them. Always clean your aligners with the recommended cleaning solution. Orthodontic aligners should be cleaned twice a day, just like you would brush your teeth.
How soon should I see results?
Some patients see results in as little as 12-18 months, although results will vary. Each set of aligners is worn for about three weeks, and then the patient switches to a new set. You will have routine checkups with Dr. Tenaglia to assess your progress and ensure that you remain on track for treatment.
What’s it like to wear Invisalign?
Invisalign patients often report that their aligners are comfortable and simple to wear. However, you may experience a little bit of tenderness or discomfort each time that you change to a new set of aligners. The reason for this discomfort is because the aligners are slowly shifting your teeth. When you change to a new set, it applies pressure in a slightly different manner than the previous est. This discomfort should subside within a few days. Continue wearing your aligners. After the first few days of having changed your aligners, your teeth become used to the pressure. Rest assured, the aligners are still working to straighten your teeth, even if you do not feel direct pressure. However, if discomfort persists, please contact Dr. Tenaglia for assistance.
