4 Dental Implant Myths

Okemos, Lansing, and East Lansing MI

If you live with tooth loss, you may be interested in exploring your tooth replacement options. Dental implants represent the finest method of tooth replacement currently available in dentistry. An implant looks, functions, and feels more like a natural tooth than any other option. And with good oral hygiene, a dental implant can last the rest of your life. There are many advantages to receiving dental implants in Okemos, but also some misinformation exists. That’s why, in this article, Tenaglia Smiles busts four dental implant myths.

Implants and how they work

The critical component of a dental implant is the implant screw made of titanium and inserted surgically into the jawbone in the exact location where the lost tooth previously resided. Over the next few months, the implant screw fuses with the jawbone. Once that process is complete, the implant procedure can be finished by installing an abutment that connects a crown.

Myth 1: Implants lead to long-term health problems

Dentists have been using implants to replace lost teeth since 1965; that’s nearly 60 years! There are no proven long-term implications associated with dental implants, and much of the evidence out there about possible health consequences is anecdotal and lacks scientific evidence. In reality, implants have a 98% success rate, according to WebMD. When implant failure does occur, it’s usually because the patient was not an ideal candidate for implants or did not properly care for the implant.

Myth 2: The implant procedure is long and painful

It’s true that receiving an implant does take time, but the result is well worth it. Patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. When the implant screw is placed, we use a local anesthetic to numb the area. Remember that getting a dental implant requires oral surgery, which means you may experience some swelling and soreness following that part of the procedure, which usually can be managed with a non-prescription pain reliever.

Myth 3: Implants are overpriced

It’s true; implants aren’t cheap. They typically cost more than a 3-unit dental bridge and may or may not be covered by dental insurance plans. Considering the lifelong cost, though, an implant is the better financial choice. As mentioned, a well-maintained implant can last forever, and care for it is as easy as brushing and flossing. Meanwhile, other tooth replacement options will need to be repaired or completely replaced about every 10-15 years.

Myth 4: An implant doesn’t look real

Definitely false! No other method of tooth replacement looks more like a real, natural tooth. When you seek out a skilled and experienced provider in implant dentistry, you can take comfort knowing that an implant will be a natural-looking replacement for your missing tooth. And, because it is permanently anchored in your mouth, it won’t impact what you eat or your speech because the implant won’t slip or shift in your mouth.
