Maintain a Healthy Smile this Spring

Okemos, Lansing, East Lansing MI

It may be the smell of freshly cut grass … the warm sunshine and afternoon rain showers … or maybe the colorful blooms on the ground and in the trees … but there’s just something about Spring that makes us smile a little more. Because of that, it’s important that your smile looks better than ever.

What are steps you can take to keep your smile like springtime: fresh, bright and youthful?

Let’s get back to basics:

Visit the dentist

When was your last dental appointment? While there, did you remember to make an appointment for six months later? If not, check your calendar because it could be time for your twice-a-year checkup. Regular dental visits are a critical preventative step to add to your oral hygiene routine. Your teeth receive a deep clean that brushing and flossing can’t always deliver, and your dentist can check for any potential issues, including the beginning stages of gum disease. Correcting these early will save a lot of time, energy and money down the road.

Choose healthy foods

Your mouth is a window to your body’s overall physical health, and spring ushers in the best two seasons for ripe, fresh fruits and vegetables! Did you know that eating celery and apples can serve as an “in-between” toothbrushing session to remove residual film or particles left from food? Some fruits contain natural sugars, and it’s always a good idea to rinse with water after eating lunch. Be sure to include some quality, calcium-rich dairy foods into your diet for healthy bones and teeth!

Drink more water

Warmer weather brings the opportunity to drink more water. Be sure the water you drink is treated with fluoride. If not, find alternate ways to get your needed fluoride, like using a dentist-approved toothpaste.

Wear a mouthguard

Does springtime beckon you outdoors to play volleyball, kickball or softball? Be sure to protect your smile with a mouthguard! Sports are often provided as a reason someone knocks out or chips a tooth. Mouthguards can prevent this, saving you cosmetic work.

Brush and floss

Perhaps the best preventative against decay and gum disease is your daily oral hygiene regime. Be sure to brush your teeth each morning after breakfast and every night before bed. Floss at least once a day, too. To boost your oral hygiene, add mouthwash to your regime.
