Fibromyalgia

Got Fibromyalgia? You should ask for a Sleep Apnea Screening

Okemos, Lansing, East Lansing MI

The severe limitations that fibromyalgia may impose on a person’s life frequently cause them difficulty. Living with fibromyalgia can be challenging due to the condition’s severe chronic pain, debilitating chronic tiredness, and other symptoms. Additionally, there aren’t many effective therapies for this poorly known illness. However, our Okemos sleep apnea dentist, Dr. Christine Tenaglia, explains that one possible course of action for treatment is being disregarded: sleep apnea therapy. According to a recent study, patients with fibromyalgia frequently suffer from sleep apnea and should be checked since treatment may reduce symptoms.

Is sleep apnea common for those who suffer from fibromyalgia?

A chart review of more than 400,000 patients sent to clinics for care served as the basis for this new study’s extensive population-based analysis. Along with other categories, the clinics offered services in rheumatology, sleep, and psychiatry. According to the study, 86% of fibromyalgia patients who were sent to a sleep clinic also had sleep apnea. This represented almost 17% of individuals who were referred, which is a proportion that is roughly three times higher than the overall population.

At other clinics, there didn’t seem to be as much of a correlation between those with fibromyalgia and those with sleep apnea. For instance, only 18.7% of fibromyalgia patients at the rheumatology clinic also had sleep apnea. And just 3.6% of fibromyalgia patients at the other clinics also experienced sleep apnea. But at these clinics, 96% of patients had never received a sleep apnea test! In other words, out of the 4% of fibromyalgia patients who underwent sleep apnea testing, 90% genuinely had it.

Unfortunately, there isn’t enough statistical evidence in this study to conclusively link sleep apnea and fibromyalgia. However, our East Lansing sleep apnea dentist explains that it does suggest that we ought to examine fibromyalgia patients to look for sleep apnea conditions.

Should those who suffer from fibromyalgia get a sleep study?

There is some data, but not enough to say that persons with fibromyalgia frequently experience sleep apnea. According to earlier research, at least 50% of fibromyalgia sufferers also have sleep apnea. According to other studies, 60% of fibromyalgia sufferers have chronic fatigue syndrome, a disorder that can readily mask sleep apnea, whose most prevalent symptoms are daytime drowsiness and chronic tiredness. Our sleep apnea dentist in Lansing explains that the effectiveness of sleep apnea treatment for fibromyalgia symptoms is unknown, but if it works even half as well as it does for migraines, the results could provide a significant improvement to the patient’s daily life.
