More and more people are choosing dental implants to replace their missing teeth, and for good reason. According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, there are approximately 2.5 million implant procedures performed every year – and that number is expected to rise as the population of the United States continues to age. With proper care, an implant can last the rest of your life. Today on the blog, Okemos’ favorite dentist Dr. Christine Tenaglia shares some ways you can get the most out of your implant.
Tip 1: Find the right implant dentist
Getting a dental implant is a big decision. For one thing, the placement of the implant screw is still surgery. You want to choose a dentist who is experienced in this procedure and has the latest technology to make the process as convenient and comfortable as possible. Dr. Christine Tenaglia has more than three decades of experience providing high-quality dental services, including implant procedures, to our patients in Okemos, Lansing, East Lansing and the surrounding areas in Michigan.
Tip 2: Practice good oral hygiene
To clean a dental implant, just brush it like you would your normal teeth, and floss around the implant to prevent the accumulation of bacteria and plaque. Be sure to brush twice a day for at least two minutes per brushing, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Adding an antibacterial mouthwash to your regimen provides an extra layer of protection.
Tip 3: Maintain a regular schedule of dental checkups
Ensure your implant maintains its form and function by continuing to see your dentist once every six months for a checkup, which should include a professional dental cleaning and a thorough oral exam. These appointments help you maintain good oral health and, with it, continued longevity for your dental implant.
Tip 4: Stop smoking
You already should have stopped smoking prior to your implant surgery. Smoking also hinders the healing process after placement of the implant, which could cause a variety of complications, up to and including implant failure. It’s best to just refrain from smoking altogether, as using tobacco in any form elevates your risk of both gum disease and oral cancer.
Tip 5: Stay alert
Although implant failure is rare, it does happen. Make sure you know the warning signs that a dental implant might be failing and, if you experience any of these issues, contact your dentist in Okemos as soon as possible to receive care.
Signs of implant failure may include:
- Severe discomfort
- Gum recession around the tooth that received the implant
- Problems chewing and/or biting
- Feeling the implant shift or loosen in your mouth
